San Jacinto College officials are preparing to launch a program that aims to shape the future of education in Texas by addressing the workforce gap in early childhood education and meeting the increasing demand for qualified teachers.

The college in Pasadena is set to launch its Bachelor of Applied Science in Education with an emphasis in early childhood education in spring 2024, according to a June 27 news release from the college.

"The BAS-ECE program is an important step in addressing the pressing workforce gap in early childhood education and promoting a more diverse pipeline of teachers," San Jacinto College Chancellor Brenda Hellyer said in the release. "We are committed to providing educational opportunities that meet the needs of our community."

The program aims to address the increasing demand for highly qualified early childhood and elementary teachers in Texas. According to projections, the demand for such teachers is expected to increase by 13% by 2030, and San Jacinto College's program is designed to meet this growing need.

The college has secured a $1.5 million grant from Houston Endowment. The grant will provide crucial support for the program's launch and initial years, covering necessary employee and operational expenses during the first two to three years, according to the release.

An initial cohort of 50 students are set to enroll in spring 2024, according to the college. The college plans to expand enrollment to 125 students in the second year, with an estimated total of 225 students expected by the third year.
