College of the Mainland plans to offer free tax assistance to qualifying students and community members in partnership with United Way Galveston County Mainland's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, according to a release from the college.

Certified business and accounting COM students will provide the tax assistance services during four sessions at the college's Doyle Family Administration Building at 1200, Amburn Road, Texas City.

“The goal is to have students educated on taxes,” COM financial aid outreach specialist, Patricia Mata said in the release. “This is an effort to encourage financial literacy and educate students and the community about federal tax information. We want nothing more than to see our students and members of the community succeed.”

Dates and times for the tax preparation sessions will be:
  • March 10, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
  • March 21, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
  • March 24, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
  • April 4, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
The service will be available to individuals whose annual household income was less than $60k and are not filing "Married Filing Separate" returns or "Schedule SE (Form 1099)," according to the program description.
