Online applications for Harris County’s low-income assistance program due Jan. 26

Select community members living in Harris County’s top 10 most poverty-stricken ZIP codes will be eligible to apply online Jan. 8 for Uplift Harris, the county's income assistance program.

The Uplift Harris Guaranteed Income Pilot program will provide $500 monthly cash payments to 1,928 Harris County residents for 18 months. Harris County Public Health is running the initiative, and officials said the goal is to improve participants’ financial and health outcomes.

Sichuan restaurant Duck N Bao to open 3rd location in Rice Village


A new location of the restaurant Duck N Bao will open this spring in Rice Village, bringing Peking-style duck, soup dumplings and other Sichuan specialties.

The eatery will be located at 5215 Kelvin Drive, Houston, according to a Jan. 4 news release. Duck N Bao is owned by husband-and-wife duo Leo and Grace Xia.

Cy-Fair child care availability scarce as COVID-19 funding ends amid growing demand


After COVID-19 federal relief funds ended in September and the Texas House voted Nov. 17 to remove education savings accounts—or private school vouchers—from legislation, child care in Cy-Fair is likely to prove more difficult to pay for—or find at all—as like many other parts of the Houston area, availability is scarce.

Custom golf shop Club Champion opens in Sugar Land


Club Champion, a custom golf club fitter, opened in a new location in Sugar Land.

The business aims to help golfers lower their game scores by fitting, selling and building custom golf clubs, according to a news release from the company. The shop also features indoor hitting bays where fitters can help customers analyze their performance, as well as a build shop to repair and assemble handmade clubs.

Politics-themed bar The Angry Elephant opening soon in Cypress


A new location of The Angry Elephant, a politics-themed bar, is opening soon at the former location of Tutto Bene Italian Cuisine in Cypress. Additional locations are in San Antonio, College Station, Magnolia and Bryan, officials said.
