Georgetown acquires 35 acres of land for future park

The city of Georgetown announced Aug. 9 its acquisition of 35 acres of land in the southeastern portion of the city to be used for a future park.

“Creating a park on the southeast side of Georgetown has been a community and city priority for more than a decade,” Parks and Recreation Director Kimberly Garrett said in the Aug. 9 news release. “We have time to develop the amenities, but securing the land now was important as Georgetown continues to grow.”

Located near the intersection of SE Inner Loop and Southwestern Boulevard, the land was purchased for $6 million for a future city park in the southeast side of Georgetown—which was identified as a priority in the 2009 and 2022 parks master plans.

The money used to purchase the land was provided through multiple funding sources, including the city’s 2008 voter-approved bond, parkland dedication fees and a donation from the Friends of Georgetown Parks.

The development of the park is several years out, according to the release, which gives the city time to create a plan for funding and develop a park master plan. This master plan will include public feedback on potential amenities and features of the new park.

The city will have the option to purchase an additional 65 acres of parkland, according to the release.
