Editor's Note: This story was updated Aug. 5 to include the correct school year 2020-21 start date, which had been incorrectly listed as Aug. 10.

Students in Richardson ISD will start and end the school year a few days later than usual in the 2020-21 school year.

The calendar was approved by a June 10 board of trustees vote. The board solidifies dates this far in advance to allow families time to plan for vacations and other events, Deputy Superintendent Tabitha Branum said.

The 2020-21 school year will begin Aug. 19 and end May 28. This is slightly different from the 2019-20 calendar, which begins Aug. 15 and ends May 22.

Two calendar options were presented to the public for review. Over 350 pieces of feedback were received with 56% in favor of option A.

"We will have 157 people who disagree with the recommendation and that's OK because they were given the opportunity to express how they felt in favor of whichever calendar," said trustee Eron Linn, who sat on the calendar committee.

The biggest difference between options A and B was the start date for the spring semester, Linn said.

The selected calendar begins the spring semester Tuesday, Jan. 5 rather than Monday, Jan. 4. This means students will get one additional day of winter break that they will not have in the 2019-20 school year.
