Richardson City Council discussed plans for four future renovation projects at Sherrill Park Golf Course during a July 18 work session.

Sherrill Park’s second golf course is the first renovation project for the city. After being renovated in 2001, the course is expected to undergo a number of improvements, including resolving major drainage issues, increasing playability, and improving turf and vegetation, according to City Council documents. The renovation on Course 2 is projected to cost nearly $7.1 million and is expected to last from January to October 2024.

Richardson Chief Financial Officer Kent Pfeil said the city is also planning reconstruction of three bathrooms on the golf courses, including two on Course 1. Each of the restrooms are at least 20 years old, with each redecoration to add sinks into the location. Construction on the Course 1 restrooms is projected to last from January to April 2023.

In addition, Pfiel said they are hoping to build a new 5,000-square-foot maintenance barn to replace the existing one, which was built in 1973 and has limited space. The new facility would contain two equipment lifts in addition to a break room/conference room, according to city documents.

A training facility is projected to be added as well. It will be approximately 2,500 square feet in size. The training facility is expected to be placed at the north end of the driving range, according to city documents. The facility is projected to have two or three hitting bays, a fitting area, evaluation equipment and software, and a small conference room.

The council discussed efforts to combine construction of the maintenance barn and the training facility during the same time to prioritize cost efficiency. This construction would last throughout 2025.

In total, all four construction projects are expected to total between $12 million-$13 million. For more information on the estimated construction costs, visit here.

Richardson officials said the city is planning to fund these projects using year-end savings, capital reserves and debt. Debt planning is scheduled to be reviewed at the July 25-26 budget workshop.
