Richardson residents may have a new coffee shop to visit following action from City Council at the Jan. 6 meeting.

The details

Council approved a special use permit for Yemeni coffee shop Haraz Coffee House that serves coffee, tea, pastries and desserts. The approval came with two requirements. The first is that the speaker box the business uses must be high-quality to reduce noise, and the second is that the business only have one drive-thru menu board instead of two, which was what was originally proposed.

The site for Haraz Coffee House, located at 508 Centennial Blvd., is on a 0.85-acre lot and a special use permit is required for any drive-thru window in Richardson. The only modifications to the site are to add a menu board and speaker box to allow drive-thru ordering, according to city documents.

The background

Council previously considered the special use permit at the Dec. 9 meeting, but tabled the discussion to allow the applicants a chance to address concerns residents had regarding the coffee shop.

The city received 13 letters of opposition from neighboring residents to the drive-thru, citing noise pollution as the primary reason for opposition.
