Richardson City Council adopted legislative priorities ahead of the upcoming Texas Legislative Session, which is set to begin in January, during the Dec. 2 council meeting.

According to documents released by the city, the highest priorities include preserving elected officials’ ability to govern based on individual and market-driven needs of Richardson residents.

Per the document, the city will oppose any legislation constraining the ability of cities to allocate resources to locally determined priorities.

Additionally, the city will support legislation blocking any attempts to prohibit the authority to use public funds to communicate with legislators and state agencies and pay membership dues to organizations that hire lobbyists.

Priorities include fiscal management, transportation, economic vibrancy, public safety, environment, education and workforce, and regional and community collaboration.

Concerning fiscal management, the document states Richardson officials will support legislation leading to greater public fiscal transparency while opposing legislation limiting the ability to manage resources entrusted to city officials by residents and business owners.

The city will support legislation related to transportation that supports the economy and improves the lives of residents through planned and well-funded regional transportation systems as the area continues to experience growth.

When it comes to economic vibrancy, the city will support legislation allowing Texas to address statewide concerns and legislation entrusting discretion over local fees and policies addressing the needs of the community.


What else?

Other priorities include environmental legislation related to water development, and additional initiatives to ensure residents have water supplies that meet current and future demand. It will also support efforts to enhance local parks and open space amenities through state and federal grant opportunities.

Concerning public safety, the city will support legislation enhancing the ability for public safety officials to protect the community using technology while promoting transparency and community policing efforts.

Lastly, the city will support funding public schools and other legislation to support academic growth and will collaborate with other entities, such as Collin County, DART, Dallas County and more, to support their legislative agendas and initiatives.
