Richardson officials will soon begin a search for a new director of development services following a retirement announcement.

According to a news release, Director of Development Services Sam Chavez announced his retirement, which is effective Aug. 30. Chavez has been with the city for 15 years, including his service as director since July 2022.

“Sam’s leadership of Development Services over the past three years has seen us continue to receive praise for both the ease at which our processes operate, as well as the eagerness of our staff to assist people as they are navigating the development process,” City Manager Don Magner said in the release.

As director, Chavez oversees the Development Services Department, which oversees the comprehensive planning process, managing zoning processes, various studies for redevelopment and more, according to the news release. Development Services staff also provide support and assistance to the city plan commission, Richardson City Council and the zoning board of adjustment.

  • CityLine Development
  • Envision Richardson Comprehensive Plan Update
  • Main Street Revitalization
  • Richardson Innovation Quarter
  • Richardson Restaurant Park
“I am proud of the work we have accomplished and the projects that are underway now that will be completed after I have retired,” Chavez said in the release.

Looking ahead

The city has contracted DC Municipal Consulting to assist with the search for Chavez’s permanent replacement. No interim director announcement has been made yet.
