After relocating to the Richardson Police Headquarters for council meetings, Richardson City Council will have a new meeting location.

City meetings and staff have been displaced since an August 2022 fire damaged the old City Hall location. Many city staff relocated to the Richardson IQ, located at 1302 E. Collins Blvd., while meetings moved to the police headquarters.

Starting Aug. 21, meetings will be held at the temporary City Hall, located at 2360 Campbell Creek Blvd., according to a city news release.

What’s happening?

The 77,000-square-foot facility will also host the library along with select city staff. Based on the current schedule, city staff are expected to move into the facility this fall, according to Director of Communications Greg Sowell.

Ahead of the move, the library will close at its current location Sept. 9 before planned renovations begin. The library will begin occupying the temporary space in October, Sowell said.

What they’re saying

“City staff displaced by the fire are looking forward to moving into the temporary space,” City Manager Don Magner said. “It will be a welcome change from the backup service locations currently being used and will make it easier for people in the community to access municipal services.”

What else?

In May, Richardson voters approved a bond proposition to raise $46 million in new funds to help pay for the construction of a new City Hall. The money raised will cover a portion of the costs for the new facility with the rest of the projected costs expected to be funded by a $16.5 million insurance settlement and more than $22 million in 2021 bond program funding.

No tax rate increase is associated with the sale of the bond proposition, Magner previously said. Construction on a new City Hall building is expected to begin in summer 2024 and to be completed by summer 2026.
