The city of Richardson is helping residents recycle their Christmas trees and gift boxes. Instructions for participation in both programs are as follows.

Where to recycle your Christmas tree

Richardson residents can recycle their Christmas tree through the city's Tree Cycling program, which turns trees into mulch and compost. Trees can be dropped off between Dec. 26 and Feb. 1 at the Municipal Service Center, 1260 Columbia Drive, Richardson. Residents can also request bulky item collection service by calling the city's service center at 972-744-4111.

Trees must be natural and decoration free.

How to recycle your cardboard boxes

Temporary drop-off locations for flattened cardboard items have been set up around Richardson. The goal of the effort is to encourage recycling and discourage theft, according to the city. The drop-off locations will remain open until Jan. 4.

Drop-off locations:

Custer Park, 700 W. Renner Road (near the tennis courts)

Recycle Center, 102 N. Cottonwood Drive
