Student gamers at the University of Texas at Dallas now have a new space for competitive and casual play.

UT Dallas cut the ribbon on its new esports gaming center, Comets Landing. The center features a number of amenities such as PC gaming stations, console gaming areas, a multipurpose event space, competitive team rooms, and broadcast and production spaces, according to the university’s website.

The details

The two-story, 16,000-square-foot-center cost $15 million and is meant to bring student gamers together for both casual and competitive play. The facility will also host collegiate and high school esports tournaments and other student events, camps, conferences and academic programs.

Additionally, the center is anchored by a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant, Calvin Jamison, vice president for facilities and economic development for the university said.

“The facility embodies the three C’s,” Jamison said. “It’s cool, it’s classy and it’s cost-effective.”

Construction on Comets Landing began in early 2024.

What else?

The center marks a new phase in the student experience, UT Dallas President Richard Benson said. In addition, it will provide UT Dallas community members a place to watch the university’s esports teams compete live against other schools.

“This premiere gaming center will showcase our highly competitive and nationally ranked varsity esports teams,” Benson said.

Quote of note

Several other additions to the university have opened or are under construction, Jamison said, including the Edith and Peter O’Donnell Jr. Athenaeum. Projects currently underway include the new student union, a new performance hall and a new addition to the university’s school of management.

“We’re not finished cutting ribbons yet,” Jamison said.
