A new building at The University of Texas at Dallas dedicated to esports and gaming areas, along with a new student dining option, is expected to open its doors next year.

Construction on the 16,000-square-foot, two-story facility began earlier this year. Once open, there will be entertainment areas, gaming stations and a broadcast studio.

“We have intentionally curated what we believe is the most complete collegiate gaming and esports experience that we could possibly give to our students,” said Dan Goodwin, director of Student Union and Student Union Programs at UT Dallas.

Two-minute impact

The facility will feature over 70 computer gaming stations, 10 console stations, a 10-player gaming arena accommodating five-versus-five play, an 80-seat entertainment area, two practice rooms, and production and broadcast rooms, said Gene Fitch, vice president of Student Affairs at UT Dallas.

“This will be the premier collegiate gaming center in the country when it's finished,” Fitch said.

In addition to student access, there could be opportunities for community partners to host tournaments or utilize the facility down the road, Goodwin said.

“We want to enhance, you know, esports on our campus, but we want to provide access to communities in the DFW area that might otherwise not have those opportunities,” Goodwin added.

The impact

The hope is that the new facility further boosts engagement opportunities and the ability for students to find a place they belong at UT Dallas, both of which are correlated with higher retention and graduation rates, Fitch said. One goal with the new facility is to offer a place for students of all skill levels to access and enjoy esports.

“What we've really tried to do with this facility is sort of treat it like a recreational center,” Goodwin said. “We're trying to make esports for all, not just for the 30 to 50 varsity level players that might be on campus.”

Additionally, there will be academic and practical experience opportunities for students through a potential microcredential for esports management, along with up to 45 student jobs in the facility.

“We really believe that these experiences can translate to some really good academic and professional development,” Goodwin said.

What else?

Officials said they expect the facility to open in January. Individuals interested in getting involved with the esports facility can email Goodwin, Fitch or Josh Buchanan, gaming and esports program manager at UT Dallas.

Along with esports facilities within the building, there will also be a full-service Buffalo Wild Wings, which will replace the space formerly occupied by The Pub.
