The University of Texas at Dallas will be under new leadership in the near future after President Richard Benson announced he is stepping down.

Benson is expected to continue serving as president of the university until his successor is selected, which will likely come late in the 2025 academic year.

“Although my time as president draws to a close, I will continue to be a proud member of the UT Dallas faculty, and I hope that there may yet be other ways for me to contribute to the life of this university,” Benson said in the announcement.

The overview

Benson’s role as president of the university began in 2016. During his tenure, the university began competing in Division II athletics and continues to work on the Edith and Peter O’Donnell Jr Atheneum, a cultural district featuring art museums and performance halls.

“Look for me there in the future, in quiet contemplation of the awe-inspiring art, the awe-inspiring music and the awe-inspiring people who make up UT Dallas,” Benson said.

What’s next?

The UT System Board of Regents is expected to start looking for Benson’s successor in the near future, per the announcement. The search could last through next summer, university officials said.

“I am deeply grateful for the privilege of serving as UT Dallas’ fifth president, and I thank you all for making this a labor of love,” Benson said.
