A proposed event center’s special permit was approved by city officials after receiving recommendation for approval from the Richardson City Plan Commission.

Richardson City Council approved the special permit for 77 Wedding and Event Center during its Sept. 25 meeting. The proposed facility is located at 1801 N. Plano Road, which was formerly Austin Avenue II Grill and Sports Bar.

In a nutshell

The event space will house two separate businesses, each with its own certificate of occupancy, according to city documents. An event space of about 5,700 square feet would occupy one part of the building with the other 3,500 square feet devoted to a Vietnamese street food restaurant.

Both uses would hold separate certificates of occupancy, per city officials. City regulations require a certificate of occupancy to be obtained within six months of the special permit.

The event center will not hold a liquor license, co-owner and operator Brendan Sherman said, adding some vendors with temporary liquor licenses might use the event center for weddings. Based on estimates contained in city documents, the occupancy of the event center is 212 people and 74 people for the restaurant.

Operating hours will be 10 a.m. to midnight the following day Sundays through Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. the following day Fridays and Saturdays.

Quote of note

“We’re trying to get away from the original bar that was in the building,” Sherman said. “We’re going to get [the building] up to speed, make it look all Richardson and treat it more like a business than a bar.”

What’s next?

Sherman said construction at the site will likely begin in November or December.
