The city of Plano announced mosquito spraying will continue as six more instances of mosquitos carrying the West Nile virus showed up in traps placed throughout the city. The sprayings come days after the city identified a second human case of West Nile within city limits this year. Three of the areas with mosquitos that tested positive for West Nile will be sprayed at 9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 24, according to a city statement. Weather permitting, the three other areas will be sprayed at 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29. The Aug. 24 sprayings will take place in the areas near the intersections of Legacy Drive and Alma Drive, Spring Creek Parkway and Mission Ridge Road and Hedgcoxe and Preston Roads. The Aug. 29 spraying will take place in areas near Alma Drive and W. Parker Road, 18th Street and Shiloh Road and Plano Parkway and 15th Street. The city advises residents near these neighborhoods to keep pets and children indoors during the sprayings. Although humans rarely contract West Nile virus—states reported fewer than 2,000 human cases to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2016—it can be life-threatening for the 1 percent of human cases that result in a serious neurological condition. People age 60 and older bear the most risk from the disease, according to the agency. For detailed boundaries of the spray areas, zoom in on one of the red zones in the map below.
