Drivers in northern Collin County now have an improved roadway on which to travel. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held June 28 at Children’s Health Stadium in Prosper for the completed Frontier Parkway expansion.

The details

Frontier Parkway, an east-west road that serves as the boundary between Prosper and Celina, was expanded from a rural two-lane road to a four-lane divided concrete roadway.

The project began in summer 2021 and was completed ahead of schedule. Including engineering, right of way acquisition and construction, the cost of the roadway expansion was approximately $34.6 million, funded through collaborative efforts by the county, Celina, Prosper and the North Central Texas Council of Governments.

“With this day and the road opening, going forward, it provides road mobility that we didn’t have before between Preston [Road] and [the Dallas North Tollway],” Celina Mayor Ryan Tubbs said. “It also enables our economies to grow based off of the retail that’s coming in, specifically to Celina on the north side of Frontier.”

What’s new

The expanded road now allows for approximately 28,000 vehicles to use it each day, compared to the around 12,000 vehicles that could use it daily as a two-lane road. The project allows for a future expansion to six lanes, which would accommodate around 45,000 vehicles daily.

Also included in the project was an overpass crossing the BNSF Railway tracks. With the addition of the bridge, drivers and emergency vehicles no longer have to wait at the railroad crossing, and passing trains no longer have to use their horns, officials said.

“This is exciting for our community because this was a two-lane road that had a railroad track running right down the middle of it, so if the train was here, we had to wait,” Prosper Mayor David Bristol said. “[The project] improves transportation, but mainly, it improves public safety.”
