Celina residents will have the chance to elect a new City Council member this December.

Celina City Council formally called for a Dec. 9 special election to fill former member Tony Griggs’ Place 6 vacancy during a special-called Sept. 28 meeting.

"I want to strongly encourage any Celina resident who has a passion for this great city and a willingness to voluntarily serve on City Council to consider applying," Celina Mayor Ryan Tubbs said in a statement posted on the city's Facebook page.

What happened?

Griggs resigned from council Sept. 14, citing personal life changes and a move out of Texas.

What’s next?

The filing period for the special election began Sept. 28 and will close at 5 p.m. Oct. 9, according to a Sept. 23 city news release.

Prospective candidates can find a copy of the ballot application here or in-person at Celina’s City Hall, located at 142 N. Ohio Street, Celina.

"This is such a historic time in Celina, and a seat on the Celina City Council affords the winner of the special election a chance to help pioneer some of Celina's most exciting and vibrant days," Tubbs said in the statement.
