The city of Plano will honor one of their own as the first to win a Stanley Cup in a ceremony Nov. 2.

Blake Coleman, who plays left wing for the Tampa Bay Lightning, is not only the first Plano native but also the first Texan to win a Stanley Cup, a city release said. In honor of his win, Plano Mayor Harry LaRosiliere and City Council members will present a proclamation and puck to Coleman at the Courtyard Theater in downtown Plano. The event will be closed to the public in adherence of city protocols during the coronavirus pandemic but will be livestreamed on Facebook and to the city's website.

Coleman's goal against the Dallas Stars in the Stanley Cup Finals in late September helped lead the Tampa Bay Lightning to its second Stanley Cup and first in 16 years, according to National Hockey League reports. This goal against the Dallas Stars, who Coleman grew up watching, was one of the biggest of his career, the NHL said.

"The Dallas Stars didn’t win, but that won’t stop us from honoring one of our homegrown athletes who reached the pinnacle of his sport," the city of Plano release quipped.

More information on the event will be made available at a later date, according to the city.
