Ruckel led the race with 39.69 percent of the vote, or 10,138 votes, followed by Hayden, who had 31.68 percent of the vote, or 8,092 votes. A third opponent, Andrew E. White, had 28.62 percent of the vote, or 7,310 votes. The runoff election will be held May 24. All results are unofficial until canvassed. Republican challengers Thomas Hayden and Andrew E. White have 30 percent of the vote, or 4,461 votes, and 27 percent of the vote, or 4,000 votes, respectively. In the Democratic primary after early election results,  Ramona Brumfield has 67.97 percent of the votes, or 4,057 votes, followed by opponent Michael Messer, who has 32.03 percent of the votes, or 1,912 votes.
