Plano City Council tabled an ordinance that would require registration and self-inspection for short-term rental properties during its Nov. 14 meeting.

According to Plano Mayor John Muns, the decision to table the item was made so the city could look more into options for gathering data on short-term rentals in Plano. Muns added that the city would be consulting with officials in nearby cities, such as Arlington, that have ruled on regulating short-term rentals.

Short-term rentals include rooms, houses, apartments or condominiums rented for less than 30 days. The city has seen an increase in short-term rentals due to digital platforms such as Airbnb and VRBO, which has resulted in an increase in “transient and vacation rental uses” in Plano, according to the agenda item.

Thirteen residents spoke on the item, all of which expressed concerns over short-term rentals in the city or concerns that the ordinance as written would not do enough to regulate short-term rentals in residential neighborhoods.

Had the council voted to pass the ordinance on Nov. 14, it would have gone into effect on Jan. 3, 2023.

The ordinance would require and application process for short-term rentals, which would require a $300 fee and would be valid for one year.
