The Plano ISD board of trustees unanimously approved the sale of 5.6 acres of district-owned land for $6 million during its Aug. 2 meeting.

The plot of land at 3540 14th St. was the location of the district’s Shiloh Center. PISD had owned the property since 1997 when it was bought from Albertsons for just under $2 million, officials said.

In October of last year, the board declared the 56,000-square-foot facility as surplus property and contracted with real estate company CBRE to put it on the market.

“One of the things that we try to do is make the determination going forward: Is this a facility that is worth long-term invested money?” Deputy Superintendent Johnny Hill said of the decision to sell the property. “Or is this something we can be more efficient in by selling that property and living within the structures of facilities that we currently already have?”

District officials said Shawn S. Ali of Angel Cellular was the winning bidder for the property. Located in Plano, that company is a cellular handset wholesaler that has customers in the U.S., Mexico, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore and more.

At the time the property was declared surplus, district officials said PISD had received a number of inquiries from real estate professionals about clients interested in purchasing the property due to its proximity to the planned Shiloh Road Station that will be part of Dallas Area Rapid Transit's Silver Line project.

The 26-mile, east-west Silver Line project will connect seven cities and four counties in the North Dallas area, including the city of Plano. It is expected to be in service in 2024.

The $1.89 billion project includes the construction of 10 new rail stations, including the Shiloh Road Station in Plano, and an update to the 12th Street station.
