Registration for an extended offering of Plano ISD elementary and middle school summer school options is now open.

In a nutshell

PISD students from grades 1-7 are now able to register for the district’s Exploration programs until April 12, according to the district’s website.

The programs provide additional opportunities for students to learn about topics such as science, literature, creativity and more.

Stacy Singleton, PISD director of expanded learning pathways, said in a presentation PISD is introducing two new Exploration programs this summer, including:
  • STEM, which will cover robotics, coding and animal sciences
  • Communications, which will cover podcasting, video production and marketing
The Exploration programs were previously called the Summer Institute for Gifted and Talented Students, but the name has been changed as the programs are now open to all PISD students. The programs will run from June 3-27.

Registration for PISD’s Visual Arts Academy, Gateway Engineering and Computer Science Bridge programs are also open. In total, the district will host 14 summer programs and expects around 6,000 students, Singleton said.

Also of note

Summer opportunities for elementary and middle school students will expand even further in 2025. Singleton said district officials are considering the addition of robotics and culinary exploration programs, along with the expansion of the two new programs.

The summer school schedule is also set to change in 2025. The Pathways to Excellence program—which provides targeted instruction to help students in grades 3-5 develop skills in reading, math, and/or science, according to the district’s website—is set to move back from June to July.

Singleton said this change was to allow students to also participate in enrichment programs in June. He added that moving the Pathways to Excellence program closer to the start of the school year will “help tremendously in the retention of information,” for those students.
