My Possibilities, a Plano-based nonprofit that offers educational and vocational training services to adults with disabilities, celebrated the groundbreaking of its new Career Services Building.

The event was held May 5 after a two-year delay due to complications related to COVID-19 that required My Possibilities to raise additional funds for the building's construction, according to a company release. The new building, set to be completed by mid-2023, will double the size of the current 40,000-square-foot campus that serves over 600 students located just north of President George Bush Turnpike, the release stated. In total, My Possibilities raised $29.3 million to construct the new facility that will house up to an additional 300 adult students, referred to as HIPsters—or Hugely Important People—by the company’s staff.

“This building to me is an acknowledgement of the right for the HIPsters to be a part of the workforce,” My Possibilities Executive Director Michael Thomas said in a released statement. “This building is more than just double in space, more than providing support to another 300 HIPsters on a weekly basis. It is about providing a pathway to inclusion through the workforce in ways that the disabilities space has never seen before.”

Plano Mayor John Muns and City Manager Mark Isrealson attended the groundbreaking event that included My Possibilities staff members, local officials, students served by the organization and various financial sponsors.

When the new building is complete, the 20-acre campus will include the Fischer Family School of Life Skills, the Career Services Building, a therapy and communications center, a wellness center, an outdoor sports complex, dormitories and a retail center focused on training and employing adults with disabilities. My Possibilities is also developing a 300-home, 180-acre residential community in Garland known as Mission Hills.
