Plano libraries will begin offering limited services, including returns and holds for specialty items, starting May 4.

All library facilities will remain closed to the public, but book drops will reopen for returns starting May 4. Any items currently checked out will have due dates beginning the week of June 1, according to an April 29 release from the city of Plano. Those with checked-out items can check their accounts online for details, the release said.

Holds, pickups and returns of specialty items will be available Mon.-Sat. 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. beginning May 4 as well. Specialty items include STEM kits, backpacks and interlibrary loan items. All existing holds will need to be picked up by May 18.

In order to pick up an item from a library, patrons should place items on hold online in the library catalog. After receiving notification that the holds are ready for pickup via phone or email, residents can drive to the library designated for pick up. Call the library’s main number after arriving, and share either your library card number or driver’s license plate. Up to 20 items will be checked out from the hold shelf, placed in a designated area for pickup and marked with a name.

The library asks that pickups be made only after items have been placed in the pickup area to help maintain social distancing, the release said.

To return special items, call the library’s main number when arriving to let staff know that a return is being made to the library’s porch.

Assistance for pickups and returns can be found by calling the library Mon.-Fri. from 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

Saturday service is expected to begin May 9, according to the release.

Digital services and virtual programming will continue online, the release stated. More information on virtual programming can be found here.
