The Plano City Council at a Dec. 20 regular meeting approved a $2.6 million expenditure to pay for a new home for Visit Plano, the city's convention and visitor bureau. The expenditure, which will be paid through the city’s convention and tourism fund, covers a 10-year lease at Legacy West, which will be paid incrementally to include build-out costs. The council also approved by consent the purchase of new furniture for Visit Plano in the amount of $60,000.
The city has been looking for a new location for the convention and visitor bureau for the past several years, according to city staff. Visit Plano has been operating out of an upstairs storage area at Plano Centre for the past 25 years.
“During this time, we have seen Plano’s hotel inventory grow from 300,000 annual room nights to more than 2 million, and while needing to grow with that inventory, Visit Plano is limited by its current housing situation,” said Mark Thompson, manager of Visit Plano, in a Nov. 21 letter to Diane Palmer Boeck, director of procurement and project management for the city of Plano.
“With the growth of the new hotel product, and the increase in hotel taxes, we believe this is the ideal time for Visit Plano to relocate and return Plano Centre’s much-needed space to them.”
The prospective site at Legacy West will feature retail space on the ground floor and a visitor’s center and office space above for CVB staff. The lease is offered at a discounted blended rate of $34 per square foot and is expected to save the city $11,000 per year, according to the letter.
