“When I came to visit them, I really liked Texas,” Celik said. “It was the America I dreamed of—I felt at home.”
Twenty years ago, Celik opened Another Time & Place in The Shops at Legacy. Prior to opening the business, he manufactured lights and jewelry for wholesalers across America. After considering other locations in the metroplex for his showroom and office, he decided Plano was the right destination.
“I didn’t find a lot of cultural places in Plano, and I felt people were open to it, so I decided to open an interesting place with a lot of color,” Celik said. “I believe color has a good impact on human psychology.”
Celik was 15 years old when he started designing jewelry, and he eventually added designing light fixtures to his portfolio. His family owns a manufacturing facility in Istanbul, which is where his products are made. For custom orders, he starts by hand-drawing designs on paper.
“I send a picture of the drawing, and I will get on the phone and explain to my brother exactly what I want,” Celik said. “I tell him the color, design [and] size.”
Celik explained that his main business is wholesale, but within the showroom his top three selling items are light fixtures that range from $79-$23,000, jewelry that ranges from $30-$7,000 and pottery that can range from $11-$11,500.
When people walk through the showroom, Celik said they are often mesmerized.
“When the people come in, they look at color,” he said. “They don’t even know I exist sometimes. When I say ‘Hi’, they don’t hear me sometimes, they are so enraptured. When I see that sparkle in their eyes, I am really happy.”
