Baylor Scott & White Medical Center-Plano opened Dec. 1, 2004.

The medical center has 160 licensed beds and offers emergency care as well as a wide range of other services including oncology, digestive disease care, weight loss surgery, orthopedics, neurosurgery, interventional radiology and more.

The backstory

The land was used as a golf course prior to becoming the site of the medical center.

“At the time, Baylor Healthcare System purchased the property and built Baylor Scott & White-Plano—the first hospital in the system ‘created from the ground up’ in more than 100 years,” said Matthew Olivolo, manager of North Texas media relations for Baylor Scott & White Health Systems, in an email. “It was the system’s first expansion into the northern suburbs of Dallas.”

What happened

The hospital opened its doors at midnight and the first patient arrived at the emergency department in the early morning hours, Olivolo said.

“In the first year, the facility grew to 86 primary care physicians,” Olivolo said. “Along with primary care physicians, many specialists and other practices became part of the hospital.”

The medical center opened with five of its seven floors in use. Now, all seven floors are fully operational, and a second medical office building has been added. Additionally, Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital-Plano was built across the street.

In its 20 years of operations, some accomplishments of the medical center include:
  • Caring for more than 120,000 inpatients
  • Serving over 446,000 patients in their emergency department
  • Completing more than 114,700 surgeries
  • Performing over 74,000 imaging exams
