Children’s Medical Center Plano plans to open its new 395,000-square-foot tower by the end of the year.

The new tower includes areas for families whose children may be hospitalized, and expanded medical facilities.

“We're doing everything that we can to provide a space and certainly the care team, to provide excellent care,” said Graham Torres, Children’s Health vice president of facilities operations. “In addition to that, we wanted the new space to be able to enhance that patient family experience to provide as much of a respite and healing environment for them as well.”

Two-minute impact

The new eight-story tower includes space to offer speciality programs, including:
  • The Pauline Allen Gill Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders
  • The Heart Center
  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical services
  • Neurology
  • Pulmonology
The number of beds will also nearly triple with the expansion to 212, compared to 72 previously. In addition to the 350,000 square feet of new space, the hospital renovated 70,000 square feet within its' existing tower, Torres said.

Vanessa Walls, Children’s Health Chief Market Executive, said the Plano campus is expected to serve as a “hub” to meet the region’s future pediatric health care needs, with connections to other facilities, such as the specialty center that opened in Prosper last year.

Looking ahead

The new tower is expected to open by the end of the year.

Along with the new tower, hospital officials are hopeful to be certified as a Level III trauma center later this year before obtaining a Level II designation after that.
