Updates to Plano ISD’s code of conduct refining acceptable expression were part of a handful of recent changes approved by the board of trustees.

Resolutions approving amendments to the code of conduct and student expression at graduation ceremonies were approved by the Plano ISD Board of Trustees at the Aug. 6 meeting.

The overview

According to board meeting documents, the primary changes to the code of conduct were:

  • Greater specification about harmful, derogatory and hateful language prohibited at schools and school-related activities and events

  • Changes to types of inappropriate clothing and grooming, such as outfits with harmful, derogatory and hateful language

  • Other formatting edits throughout the document

Other changes to expression standards at graduation ceremonies were done to ensure consistency across all district events, per the documents. One of the primary changes included highlighting that all graduation speeches must comply with all applicable state and federal laws, in addition to district policies and graduation guidelines.

All changes approved by the board for expression policies and the code of conduct were effective for the 2024-25 school year, which began Aug. 13.
