A car storage facility geared toward high-end automobiles could soon be built in southern Plano.

Plano City Council approved a planned development overlay on 12.6 acres for a “car club” concept developed by Maranello LLC at the Oct. 14 meeting. The new business will be located just north of Mapleshade Lane near the intersection with Ohio Drive.

The overview

The planned development overlay will allow for vehicle storage and repairs, office uses and gatherings within a central courtyard area covered with artificial turf, according to city documents. Director of Planning Christina Day said units within the facility would be up to 12,000 square feet and include a mezzanine lounge area for owners.

Michael Holigan, the developer for the project, said individuals are able to buy a storage unit within the facility, which can be used to house their collections. The lounges are expected to provide social spaces for unit owners, he added.

“The whole idea is to build a sense of community among the car owners,” Holigan said.

Based on renderings shown by the applicant, there would be two main entrances on the front of the building and one in the rear.

What else?

The request previously received a unanimous recommendation of approval from the planning and zoning commission.

Holigan said a central courtyard area would be available for use to host car shows or other events.

“Most of the time that will be empty, but when the Ferrari club or the Porsche club wants to do a car show, we have a hydraulic fence that drops down and allows the cars to enter,” Holigan said.

The main building for the facility also includes lounge space across from administrative offices, which could be utilized for gatherings as well.
