The Plano Parks and Recreation Department revealed plans at a Oct. 22 city council meeting to construct a new aquatic facility to the Oak Point Recreation Center. Construction for the new facility is expected to begin near the end of 2019 or beginning of 2020, Plano Parks and Recreation spokesperson Kelley Crimmins confirmed. The council approved a $109,000 expenditure at the meeting to solicit design services for the facility from Weston & Sampson Engineers, Inc. City recreation services Superintendent Gregg Gagnon said the project’s design team has recently begun discussing concepts for the future aquatic facility. “We had our initial meeting with the design team on Nov. 8 so they could get a firsthand look at the site,” Gagnon said in a statement. "We discussed general concepts for the design, such as it having elements/features that are different from our other facilities and that the facility must be designed to accommodate all age groups. At the present time, the design team is evaluating the current building plans and doing their homework on various code regulations that will determine what we must include in the project (additional locker space, additional parking).” The new aquatic facility will be located at the site of an existing outdoor pool at the recreation center, Crimmins said. The remaining balance in the current project budget is $791,500. Voters approved funding for the future aquatic facility as part of the city’s 2017 bond referendum, according to a city-prepared document related to the project.
