The mayor and council serve three-year terms with two-term limits and without compensation.

Top issues in 2011
- Natural gas drilling — The city worked through an update to its drilling ordinances and dealt with its first two controversial applications in 2011.
- Water conservation — Southlake was the first of the three cities to require residents to follow an outdoor watering schedule in response to an historic drought and heat wave.
- DFW Connector project — Construction on the estimated $1.1 billion DFW Connector project moved steadily toward Southlake's borders this year as crews began work on the bridge that will connect Southlake Boulevard to Northwest Highway.
- Capital improvement projects — Improvements were made to parks, sidewalks and roads throughout the city. Phase 1 of the upgraded Bicentennial Park opened in the summer. Phase 2 is scheduled for completion in July 2014.
Top issues for 2012
- Southlake 2030 Plan — The master plan maps out the city's vision for the future, which includes a multipurpose center, a senior center and a library.
- Water conservation — The possibility of a continued drought this year will make water conservation and resident education an issue for the city and region.
- Transportation — Southlake will continue working with TxDOT to improve traffic flow with the completion of the FM 1709 median project.
- Budgeting process — The city plans to focus on ensuring that the city's budget remains balanced.
- A new hospital — Construction begins this year on Forest Park Medical Center, a new three-story, physician-owned hospital on the corner of Hwy. 114 and North White Chapel Boulevard.
