From districtwide safety upgrades to appointing a new superintendent, here are five actions taken by the McKinney ISD board of trustees in 2023.

1. McKinney ISD approves $2.9 million in security upgrades across district

At a Jan. 24 meeting, board members approved $2.91 million in construction costs to accelerate security improvement projects at more than 15 schools across the district.

2. McKinney ISD earmarks funds for refresh of 2 campuses

McKinney ISD board members at a Jan. 24 board meeting approved using funds already included in the 2021 bond for renovations at Scott Johnson Middle School and McKinney Boyd High School.


3. New McKinney ISD superintendent officially steps into role

The board of trustees approved the appointment of Shawn Pratt as the district's new superintendent during a special meeting March 22.

4. McKinney ISD joins Texas school districts in lawsuit against TEA

McKinney ISD officials joined several other school districts in a lawsuit against the Texas Education Agency over its failure to adequately notify school districts of the changes made to the way accountability ratings are calculated as well as retroactively making the changes.


5. McKinney ISD officials vote to not employ chaplains as school counselors

Chaplains will not be allowed to be employed or volunteer as school counselors in McKinney ISD after the district’s board of trustees voted 6-1 on the policy during a Sept. 25 meeting.
