McKinney ISD board members at a Jan. 24 board meeting approved using funds already included in the 2021 bond for renovations at SJMS.
Because of the school’s size—more than 150,000 square feet—renovations were split into two separate projects, according to meeting documents. The first part, which included all heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit replacements, was completed during summer 2022.
Lighting refreshes, interior finishes, and library and cafeteria renovations were also completed alongside the HVAC replacements.
For the second project, contractors will renovate administration areas, the school’s exterior, main corridor as well as performing arts and athletics areas. Those areas will receive new equipment and miscellaneous repairs, such as replacing the bleachers in the gyms and repainting the walls of various rooms.
Both projects at SJMS will cost nearly $1.35 million altogether.
The second half of renovations will start on the last day of school for the 2023-24 year and be completed over the summer.
MBHS is also slated to get its indoor practice field’s turf replaced by the end of the summer, according to meeting documents. The turf project, first announced in December, has an updated cost of $414,155.
