The McKinney City Council had a busy night Tuesday as three large items appeared on the agenda including a controversial rezoning, a much-discussed parking garage and a large land annexation.

Neighborhood nixed

Pilots and neighbors of a would-be subdivision breathed a sigh of relief Tuesday after the McKinney City Council voted against a rezoning request by 380 Holdings LLC that would have allowed a subdivision to be built in the 60 acres just north of Aero Country airport’s grass runway.

More than 30 pilots and Aero Country residents attended the council meeting and expressed opposition to the rezoning and the company’s plans to build a subdivision near the airport, located south of US 380 and west of Custer Road.

The decision came after several months of debate over safety issues and property rights.

Annexation

The city council voted to annex nearly 675 acres near the intersection of FM 543 and US 75 in hopes of securing a spot for a major retail center or mall. According to city officials, it is the last viable intersection in the city that meets requirements by some major retailer stating that the location must be outside of a 10-mile radius of another store.

Parking garage coming to downtown

A parking garage is in the works for downtown McKinney. The council voted in favor Tuesday of a six-level parking structure to be built east of Church Street between Louisiana and Virginia streets. The design of the garage will compliment the surrounding historic buildings and will feature one basement level and five aboveground levels for a total of more than 400 parking spaces. Funding for the project comes in part by a 2010 bond election while remaining funds will be voted up in an upcoming November bond election.
