The McKinney Police Department will buy a command post vehicle after McKinney City Council approved a budget amendment to allow for the purchase at an April 2 meeting.

The details

The roughly $1.3 million purchase will be for a single vehicle that will act as a command post for the department.

The vehicle, a large truck, will be used as a “central operation point” for special events, such as the CJ Cup Byron Nelson golf tournament or various holiday events, Darryl Saffold, public information officer for the McKinney Police Department, said in an email. The vehicle can also be used in the case of an active attack or officer-involved shooting, he said.

The vehicle will serve as a “new addition” and expand the department’s resources, Saffold said.

Diving deeper

Council members unanimously approved budget amendments to allow for the purchase as part of the consent agenda at the meeting, with council members Patrick Cloutier and Rick Franklin absent.

The budget amendments included appropriating:
  • $450,000 from a law enforcement fund
  • About $917,000 from the Public Safety Improvement Fund
