The owner of David Yowell Construction, which is celebrating 30 years of business in McKinney, said he enjoys the artistic side of construction and the ability to create something out of nothing.

The family-owned business specializes in custom homes and renovations as well as office construction and remodels.

“We start with a blank canvas, which in construction is a patch of dirt or an empty lot,” owner David Yowell said. “When we’re finished we have built something that may be there for another 100 years.”

He also said he enjoys the personal aspect of his construction company.

“One highlight over all these years has been the customers I’ve worked with,” Yowell said. “I want people to know I have involvement in every job, every day, either on the job site or behind the scenes.”

Owning a construction company was a natural fit for Yowell, who is a second-generation builder.

“Entrepreneurship runs deep in my family, and it was instilled in me as I grew up,” he said. “I knew I wanted to conjure up a way to have my own business, and it made sense to build on what I knew, which was construction.”

Yowell said construction was not a fallback career for him, but it is instead “more of a lifestyle.”

“Sometimes the industry as a whole is considered a fallback when nothing else works out,” Yowell said. “But that’s like saying you are OK having a surgeon who got in the medical field because he failed at everything else.”

Yowell said he likes to keep his company small because it allows for more customer care.

“I feel like we are one of the last of the Mohicans when it comes to working for the customer,” he said. “We are not just here to make a profit. We are one of a handful of good, honest people trying to provide a service. As a business, we are just a little bit of a different animal. We won’t take jobs if we can’t service them properly. That’s why we do most of our work in our own backyard.”
