The Denton County Transportation Authority’s board of directors voted to dissolve the North Texas Mobility Corporation during a June 27 meeting.

What happened?

The board voted to dissolve the NTMC after ending its agreement with the corporation in May. Employment offers have been issued to all of the NTMC’s employees, according to the June 27 meeting agenda.

At the time of action, 51 bus operators who were employed by the NTMC have accepted offers of employment directly with the DCTA. NTMC employees in certain support roles will begin employment with the DCTA on June 28. Bus operators will begin employment with the DCTA on July 22.

The resolution approves dissolution of the NTMC by Aug. 9 at the end of a 60-day termination period that started in May, according to the agenda. Any budget funds that were allocated to the NTMC will be transferred to the DCTA once all corporation employees transition to the DCTA.

Looking back

The DCTA created the corporation in 2019 when bus operations were transferred from a private operator that was contracted to the agency. The agreement between the DCTA and the corporation enables bus operators to be represented by the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1338 chapter while operating buses for the DCTA.

Resignation of key leaders at the corporation caused a delay in collective bargaining negotiations between the NTMC and the union. The delay prevented the NTMC from raising wages and hiring new bus operators.

The action taken by the board in May kicked off a process in which the DCTA offered direct employment to all NTMC employees. At the time, the NTMC employed 78 people.
