The district will need to utilize banked instructional minutes and a bad weather day April 21 to make up the lost time, Chief of Staff Shawna Miller said at the Feb. 3 board workshop.
The details
The 2024-25 calendar has a professional learning day scheduled for Feb. 14, a day that students have off. The district currently has 420 minutes banked to use for instructional time and it needs 435 minutes to cover a full learning day, Miller said.
Professional learning minutes can be used as instructional minutes under state guidelines, so LISD plans to extend the Feb. 14 professional learning day by 15 minutes through a previously approved waiver, which will allow the district to make up one of the missed days using minutes, Miller said.
The other missed day will be made up using the April 21 bad weather day, which means all students and staff will now need to attend school on that day.
Looking ahead
Several campuses closed Feb. 3 after the city issued a boil water notice. The notice was lifted and students returned Feb. 4, according to a district news release.
The district will need to consult with the Texas Education Agency to discuss a potential waiver for the missed time and will determine how the missed time will be made up at a later date, Superintendent Lori Rapp said.
