A boil water notice issued within the city of Lewisville is impacting nearly 80% of water customers, according to a news release.

The affected area includes much of central Lewisville, per a map released by the city. Water pressure and water service were impacted starting about 10 p.m. Feb. 1 because of a failure with a 30-inch water main, per the release.

While water service has been restored, according to the news release, the system had to be flushed because of the drop in water pressure, which also necessitates the need for water quality testing.

"When pressure is lost, it becomes possible to have backflow into the pipes that can hold contaminants," Lewisville's Public Information Officer Matt Martucci said in an email. "We flush the pipes to clear out any foreign material that might be present, kind of like washing your metal drinking straw between sodas."

What you need to know

Customers under the boil water notice should boil tap water prior to cooking, drinking, brushing teeth, hand-washing and other similar uses. To prepare the water, individuals should bring tap water to a vigorous boil and continue boiling for two minutes to destroy potentially harmful bacteria or microbes that may be present.

"We urge anyone inside the boil water area to follow the stated safety protocols for their own protection," Martucci said. "While there is not a high risk of contamination, there is not zero risk."

Residents wanting to check if they are under a boil water notice can use the city’s online map and use the find address or place feature.
