The latest set of construction-related traffic changes has come to the intersection where Gaston Avenue meets Hwy. 78 near the southern tip of White Rock Lake.

As of Feb. 11, eastbound and westbound traffic on Gaston Avenue will be moved to a single outside lane in each direction beginning north of the intersection and continuing through the work zone.

The move, which will include new access points for drivers entering Gaston Avenue from Hwy. 78, will allow paving work to be completed on inside lanes, according to a Texas Department of Transportation press release. As part of the effort, adjustments will be made to the timing of the traffic signal at the intersection, with drivers urged to be on alert for short durations of red flashing lights.

Without providing a specific date, TxDOT officials said the traffic changes are expected to remain in place until the spring.

The latest work is part of a more than $6.3 million intersection improvement project that began in late 2021. The project is designed to provide vehicles with safer turning at the intersection as well as give pedestrian and bicycle traffic safer crossing options. Initially expected to be completed by this spring, TxDOT officials now expect the overall project to be completed by the fall.

TxDOT officials are urging drivers to plan ahead for delays at the intersection, especially during peak travel times.
