A new Monster Mini Golf location is coming to Keller after city officials approved the new establishment in a near unanimous vote during their meeting Jan. 7.

The details

Holly Hernandez, owner of Monster Mini Golf, was seeking a specific use permit from the city to operate an in-door entertainment facility where people can play a variety of games and see animatronic monsters.

The establishment provides mini golf, arcade games, mini bowling, a laser maze and special event rooms for parties or corporate events.

It will sit at the southeast corner of the Keller Parkway and Keller Smithfield Road south intersection. The owners are not sure when the new facility will open.

Zooming in

According to city documents, 10-25 employees will be staffed at the facility during operating hours. It will generally operate Monday through Thursday, 2-9 p.m.; Fridays, 2-10 p.m.; Saturdays, noon-10 p.m. and Sundays, noon-8 p.m.

The facility is about 13,800 square feet and used to house a Tuesday Morning. The city mailed out 44 letters of notification about the project within 300 feet of it but got no responses in support or opposition.

About 42 parking spots are required for the project and it currently includes about 464.

What they’re saying

City Council member Tag Green was the lone vote against the specific use permit. He said he had concerns about some of the animatronic monsters.

“Some of these are more graphic,” he said at the Jan. 7 meeting. “I asked some families with children in our community if they would take them there and I’ve got a lot of negative responses.

“If I were going to have an indoor amusement in Keller, I would like it to be something that every new family embraces and wants to bring their kids to.”

However, Hernandez said the monsters at the facilities are meant to be “spooky, not scary.”

After a few minutes of discussion, the city council voted to approve the specific use permit for the Keller facility. Hernandez said she wasn’t sure what to expect from the council but appreciated their vote of approval.

“I’m super excited to come and bring our concept to Keller,” she said.
