Science education and other activities are planned for a new venue in Keller after the City Council on Feb. 20 approved a specific use permit for the business in OId Town Keller.

The details

Council voted unanimously for an ordinance approving a specific use permit for an event venue in approximately 610 square feet of an existing 0.14-acre lease space at 138 Olive St. The space is located on the south side of Olive St., near the intersection of South Main St. and Olive St.

Zooming in

The applicant, Marissa Bryson, wants to open Salt and Light Collective LLC, which will offer life skills classes specializing in STEM, or science, technology, engineering and math. It will also host cooking classes, crafts and small events such as birthday parties. Classes and special events can be held by reservation only. A specific use permit is required for a commercial event venue in Old Town Keller.

What they’re saying

Council member Ross McMullin said he liked the application and concept.

“I’m really excited about what you’re bringing to Keller,” McMullin told the applicant. “Anytime someone’s talking about science, technology, engineering and math for especially families and kiddos, that’s awesome. So, thank you for going through this process.”

Council member Jessica Juarez said she liked how the business can cater to homeschool families, as there are limited resources for those families to do extracurricular activities for both parents and children.

Also of note

There is no estimated opening date for the business yet, said Rachel Reynolds, communication and public engagement manager for the city of Keller.
