It just got a little easier for Roanoke residents to receive up-to-date reports.

The city of Roanoke recently announced plans that it is implementing a new service allowing residents to receive free digital notifications from the city, its fire department and the police department about emergencies, weather events, road closures and more, according to a Nov. 21 news release.

This will help residents “stay instantly informed of trusted, neighborhood-level public safety and community information,” according to the news release.

Messages will be delivered via email, phone and text message. Residents can select the type of information they would like to receive. A signup option is available online and through text.

Community members can text:

  • “ROANOKE” to 888777 for emergency alerts or other important news;

  • “RNKWEATHER” to 888777 for weather notifications from the Roanoke Fire Department; and

  • “RNKTRAFFIC” to 888777 for traffic notifications from the Roanoke Police Department.
