In a joint Keller City Council/Planning and Zoning Commission meeting on April 14, city of Keller officials approved a permit for the city’s first liquor store.

A special-use permit was granted for a Spec’s Wine, Spirits & Finer Foods at 100 Chandler Road, Keller, in the Keller Town Center zoning district.

The planned 12,180-square-foot building will be located north of Natural Grocers and adjacent to the Newton Ranch subdivision. The building will exceed unified development code requirements of 70% brick or stone material, according to Julie Smith, city of Keller director of community development.

The project will be located on a 1.71-acre lot and will include 68 parking spaces, cross connection access to Keller-Smithfield Road and at least a 30-foot landscape buffer for nearby residents.

Proposed hours of operation for the store are Mon.-Sat. from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. The store will be closed on Sundays.

The request for a special-use permit was approved unanimously by the planning and zoning commission and by 6-1 vote from City Council. Council Member Tag Green voted against approval.

A site plan for the project will be approved at a later date before construction begins.

Keller residents first approved sales of all types of alcohol within city limits in November. Residents approved a proposition allowing alcohol sales with 70% of the vote.

City of Keller officials have estimated the potential tax benefit from alcohol sales at more than $200,000 per year.
