After investing roughly $70 million for the expansion of its Brain and Spine Hospital in August 2014, the Medical Center of Plano is making efforts to facilitate another expansion to continue to meet demand. The expansion was in response to the growing number of incoming patients with strokes, traumatic brain injuries and brain tumors throughout the region.
“It was a really big investment, and the demand was so great that we filled it up within the first two months,” CEO Charles Gressle said.
The hospital treats a multitude of conditions with corrective surgery and other services that range from epilepsy and brain tumors to scoliosis and stroke.
“It’s not only [about the] beds and the brick and mortar—it’s about the comprehensiveness of care we provide,” he said. “Patients want a one-stop shop for everything related to the brain and spine.”
The Brain and Spine Hospital offers comprehensive care to patients while interacting with local health care providers like the Texas Back Institute to ensure regional patients have the best care, Gressle said.
The Medical Center of Plano is also looking into expanding its burn and reconstructive unit to include pediatric services as well as expanding its oncology services, Gressle said.
The hospital should also receive its Level I trauma status in November, allowing it to provide care for every aspect of injury.
