Cooper Hodsdon, the owner of DFW Landscaping & Lawn Care in Colleyville, offers some tips for landscaping this summer.

What is the best time of day in the summer to get landscaping tasks done?

Beat the heat. The mornings before noon are always best to get landscaping tasks completed. The summer heat can zap your energy very quickly, especially if you are directly in the sun. If you ... have shaded areas around your house, try to stay in them as much as possible.

What are homeowners’ biggest mistakes when self-landscaping?

One of the biggest mistakes when doing any DIY landscaping is failing to plan for the future when it comes to maintenance. You can create a beautiful landscape and spend hours and thousands of dollars installing decorative stone, flowers, plants, mulch, etc. However, if you don’t take into account what it will take to maintain your new landscape, you can quickly become overwhelmed when in a few weeks or months, weeds begin to take over, or grass starts growing into your newly spread mulch, and you don’t have the time to keep up with it.

How do varying temperatures affect how often you should have land maintenance done?

Temperature affects several aspects of maintenance for your lawn and landscape. If you have annual plants, they will need to be replaced when they die off from either the high heat or freezing temperatures. You may need to wrap or tarp your plants if a freeze is coming. Your lawn should be maintained year-round in all temperatures.
