The REC of Grapevine is slated to get seven new strength machines for group fitness classes and general use.

What happened?

Grapevine City Council members approved up to $40,000 for the purchase during a March 4 meeting. The equipment will be purchased from Comm-Fit, a fitness equipment wholesaler based in Addison. The machines cost about $36,324 but charges for shipping and handling may change which is why staff requested up to $40,000, Parks and Recreation Director Chris Smith said.

Officials are purchasing the machines to help address high demand for popular strength training equipment in the fitness room, according to a staff memo. The new equipment will be located in Studio B and remain available for group fitness classes and general use during peak fitness room hours.

Equipment that’s already in Studio B will be relocated to other parts of the facility in order to make room for the new equipment, Smith said.

The action comes after Barker Rinker Seacat Architecture delivered a final report detailing more potential renovations that can be made at the REC.

The specifics

The following strength machines will be purchased for Studio B:
  • Horizontal leg curl
  • Leg extension
  • Knee raise-abdominal crunch
  • Low back
  • Seated row
  • Pec fly/rear delt
  • Smith machine
The background

Zach Bisek, principal and operations partner with BRS Architecture, presented the firm’s final report to council members during the meeting. Council members called for the study in August 2024.

The final report details potential renovations the city can pursue in the future. The proposed renovations were split across three priorities, Bisek said.
  • Fitness area
  • Classrooms and office space
  • Child watch and office space
The final report recommended renovation of nearly 17,000 square feet of space at the facility and adding 15,600 square feet of new space. If pursued by the city, the report estimates the total cost of all the recommended renovations would be about $12.6 million.
