The Colleyville Parks and Recreation Advisory Board met Jan.6 to discuss a potential expansion for the rec center, including a new gym and second-floor track.

The big picture

The expansion would only happen after the May 3 city election if residents approve taking on the taxes necessary to complete the cost of construction and maintenance.

The estimated cost for construction is $16.34 million with an additional $3.66 million for maintaining the center, which includes additional staff and programs. That makes the total estimated cost $20 million.

Each Colleyville household will be estimated to pay an additional $22.11 a month in taxes if voters approve the expansion. The tax increase would last 20 years and be a total of $265.28 a year per household.

Zooming in

The expansion would include a new gymnasium, a fitness room with equipment including cardio machines, hand weights and weight machines and an expanded lobby on the first floor. The second floor would have a fitness room and a two-lane track that would run around both the existing and the new gym.

There will also be an outdoor Crossfit area and a walking trail around the site.

The recreation center would only be for Colleyville residents with no additional membership fees. Individual classes may require residents to pay out of pocket.

The backstory

The northern wing of the rec center opened Dec. 16, according to a Colleyville Facebook post. The gym is lined for basketball, volleyball and pickleball. An upstairs game room includes billiards, foosball, air hockey and ping pong.

The grand opening was held on Aug. 27 and opened the basketball gym and individual fitness spaces to residents.

The rec center is free for Colleyville residents, excluding certain programs. Currently, non-Colleyville residents can use the facility if a Colleyville citizen accompanies them.
